Asbestos Disposal

Once all traces of asbestos have been removed from your residential or commercial property, the next step is to dispose of it. Being a hazardous material, the safest method of asbestos disposal is to have an experienced and licensed removalist take care of the job for you, as they have the equipment and training to dispose of it safely. In Victoria, any disposal is controlled by the Environmental Protection Authority and must only take place at particular locations that are licensed to accept asbestos waste products. Aussie Asbestos Solutions specialises in asbestos disposal in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, providing the services you need to ensure all risks are eliminated from your property and any hazardous materials are securely and safely disposed of.

What asbestos waste needs disposal

Asbestos waste is not limited to large sheets pulled from walls and roofs. Any material containing asbestos, and anything contaminated by it, must be handled and disposed of correctly. We collect and dispose of:

  • Fibro sheeting from walls, ceilings, eaves and fences
  • Roof sheeting, flue pipes, gutters and downpipes
  • Vinyl floor tiles and backing that contain asbestos
  • Broken fragments and debris found in gardens, sheds or under houses
  • Contaminated plastic sheeting, protective clothing and cleaning materials

Many clients across Chelsea, Frankston and Dandenong call us after finding old sheets stacked behind a shed or dumped in a backyard. Disposal can be booked as a stand alone job, or included with our asbestos fence removal and asbestos roof removal services.

Our asbestos disposal process

Safe disposal is about keeping waste sealed from the moment it is picked up to the moment it reaches an authorised facility:

  • Assess the waste: we look at the type, amount and condition of the material.
  • Dampen: loose or broken pieces are wetted to limit dust.
  • Wrap: waste is placed on heavy polythene sheeting and fully wrapped and taped.
  • Label: each package is clearly marked as asbestos waste.
  • Load carefully: packages are placed into our vehicle so they stay intact during transport.
  • Deliver to an authorised site: waste goes to a landfill or facility authorised to accept asbestos.
  • Record: for commercial jobs, waste movement is recorded through EPA’s Waste Tracker.

What to do while you wait for collection

If you already have asbestos waste on site, a few simple steps keep everyone safer until we arrive. Leave the material where it is and avoid breaking, stacking or dragging it. Keep children, pets and visitors away from the area, and do not drive over or mow around loose pieces. If sheets are broken or dusty, lightly misting them with water helps keep dust down. Cover the pile with heavy plastic if rain or wind could spread fragments, but do not try to bag or wrap it yourself if that means handling broken pieces. Most importantly, never put asbestos in a skip hired for general building waste, as it must be kept separate and disposed of at an authorised facility.

What affects the cost

We quote disposal once we understand the waste. Price is shaped by:

  • The volume and weight of asbestos waste
  • Whether the material is intact or broken into small fragments
  • Access for carrying waste to our vehicle
  • Whether soil or other items are contaminated and also need removal
  • Facility disposal fees, which vary by waste type and quantity

Your safety and compliance

EPA Victoria is clear that asbestos waste must never be placed in household rubbish, recycling or green waste bins, and must only go to a landfill authorised to receive it. For business and commercial jobs, licensed removalists must hold EPA permission to transport this type of waste and must use Waste Tracker so each load is recorded. We are registered with the EPA in Victoria and handle these requirements for you.

Illegally dumped or poorly handled asbestos creates risks for your family, neighbours and waste workers. If broken pieces are involved, you may also need asbestos testing to check nearby materials or soil. Remember that WorkSafe Victoria requires a licensed removalist for more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos and any friable asbestos.

We collect asbestos waste from Brighton to Mornington and across Melbourne. Get a free quote for asbestos disposal.

Asbestos disposal: common questions

Can I put small pieces of asbestos in my wheelie bin?

No. EPA Victoria does not allow asbestos in household rubbish, recycling or green waste bins, no matter how small the pieces. Asbestos must be securely wrapped and taken to a landfill authorised to accept it. We can collect even small amounts and make sure they are disposed of correctly.

I found old fibro sheets in my backyard. What should I do?

Leave them where they are and avoid breaking, moving or stacking them. Keep children and pets away. If sheets are already broken, you can lightly dampen them to limit dust. Then call us to assess the material, wrap it properly and dispose of it at an authorised facility.

Can I take asbestos to the tip myself?

Householders can take small quantities of properly wrapped asbestos to a landfill authorised to accept it, but you should call the facility first, as not all sites accept asbestos and some have specific rules. Wrapping and transporting it yourself carries risk, so many people prefer to have us handle it safely.

Do you provide proof of disposal?

For commercial and industrial jobs, asbestos waste movement is recorded through EPA’s Waste Tracker system, which provides a record of where the waste was taken. For residential jobs, ask us about the documentation available when we quote, and we will explain what you will receive once disposal is complete.
